The early history of Fort Fairfield and the surrounding area is tightly woven into the history of the Maine-New Brunswick border controversies that endured from 1783 to 1843. If it were not for this controversy, Fort Fairfield might not have been founded and it certainly wouldn’t have had the same name. Because the boundary area was wild and unexplored, no clear boundary was ever drawn between French territory and the British colonies before the end of the American revolution and the Treaty of Paris in 1783. It was to such a place that the hopeful early settlers came. From primitive beginnings the townspeople settled their disputes with neighbors and established a stable community with a proud history of thriving institutions and families whose stories make up this book.
